Rina Carmel is a senior associate in Carlson, Calladine & Peterson LLP’s Los Angeles office, where she specializes in all aspects of complex coverage litigation, including defense of bad faith suits, contribution and declaration relief actions; commercial and intellectual property litigation; and appeals. She has represented insurers and reinsurers on a national basis, and her expertise includes analysis of complex claims under commercial general liability, excess, directors and officers, errors and omissions, first-party property, media and specialty lines policies.

Ms. Carmel maintains a detail-oriented approach to all of her cases, while never losing sight of the “big picture” issues, in order to work to meet her clients’ goals as efficiently and effectively as possible. She works closely with her clients, and is diligent and responsive in communicating with her clients. She has argued at hearings on dispositive and other motions, including oral arguments before the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, and represented clients in arbitration and at administrative hearings.

Ms. Carmel’s published decisions include Century Surety Co. v. United Pacific Ins. Co., 109 Cal.App.4th 1246 (2003), review denied, No. S117884 (Cal. Sept. 17, 2003); and Sun Action Textiles, Inc. v. American Mfrs. Mut. Ins. Co., No. 02CC17408 (Cal. Super. Ct. Orange Cty., Mar. 16, 2004), reported in Mealey’s: Emerging Insurance Disputes, Vol. 9, Issue 7 (Apr. 6, 2004) at pp. 23-24 and A-1 to A-5.

In July 2006, Ms. Carmel was named a Rising Star in Southern California Super Lawyers® magazine, a distinction reserved for the top 2.5% of attorneys in Southern California.

Ms. Carmel has authored articles on a wide range of insurance topics and litigation, including bad faith, advertising injury, additional insurance, independent counsel, late notice, coverage under specialty lines policies, and trial techniques. She has been invited to speak at meetings of the Insurance Law Committee of the American Bar Association, and serves as a Website Managing Editor for the Committee’s website. She is also an active member of the Defense Research Institute.

Ms. Carmel is licensed to practice in California. She is admitted before the United States Supreme Court, the United States Court of Appeals for Ninth Circuit, all United States District Courts in California, and the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.
